Valentine's Day is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine's cards, gifting candy or jewelry. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In the second half of the twentieth century, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manner of gifts in the United States, usually from a man to a woman.
